Oh my, I couldn't resist - I had to do Karin Jurick's Different Strokes from Different Folks project this week. I feel like I'm lurching around from pillar to post trying this and that, on another of those byways depicted on a previous post 'Diversion', but I hope I'm learning from doing these exercises. This image reminded me of a little oil painting 
I did some years ago, of a woman sitting in a bus shelter, that was on one of my very first blog posts. I like the simplicity of the figures on the plain geometric backgrounds, and the ordinariness and quietness of their activities - maybe a series one of these days.One thing I learnt is that I'm out of practice at drawing and painting people, something I do aspire to do well (I want to paint like Karin!). I like the newspaper man better when I stretch him upwards a bit and he's not so squashed looking, but that would be cheating. Well, on with the Still Life Duo project, and I have to paint our front garden path while it's looking lush and blossomy, and my son still wants his Old Masters portrait...

Your watercolor is a nice interpretation--you really got the light! But I especially love your oil painting--the woman is wonderful; the everydayness of the activity is nicely mirrored in the monolithic quiet of the shapes and composition.
I used to take life drawing--and never got very good; it was totally hit or miss--but, the more time goes by, the less inclined I am to even try to do a person, though I would like to!
Oh my! This is going to be addictive for you, and for me to see your responses. Karen Jurick is a legend, isn't she? And so are you. It's lovely to see my favourite bus-stop lady again.

I'm really sorry I sold that little oil, Laura, it just seemed to paint itself and I wasn't ready to let her go! I think I'm starting to get unsure about painting people too - time to get back into it, maybe?
VP - yes, I have to take ahold of myself sometimes - got to be wary of impulsive reactions...got to paint that, and that, and THAT!!
wish I'd given you the bus-stop lady instead - you originally loved the first watercolour version I did, which sold at the school exhibition - sorry!:o(
Am feeling better - perhaps it was the icky colours I used in the bottles background that made me sick!;o) Looking forward to seeing the progress on Tulips XXX

You must not worry again (on my behalf) about selling that. I could not be happier with the Emmarentia Dam scenes I have, +the windows...MUCH admired by all.
Lovely to see Bus Stop Lady in Yellow again! I like 'squashed' guy - he looks just like an old chap I see at my gym, who has a hump back so sits like that when he reads. His wife was in my pilates class and she DIED two weeks ago. She had health issues - but was so together and enthusiastic about life. We will miss her.
both are lovely Cathy...your first one more dramatic in colour and emotion and I love the second one especially for it's "lightness" and relaxed activity!
