Drawing Day

Yesterday was Drawing Day... and I really didn't have much time to do it, but in between shopping and other essentials I stopped in at the wonderful Moyo restaurant at Zoo Lake, a favourite R&R place for Johannesburgers, for coffee and some quick pencil drawing... The restaurant owners promote and collect original contemporary African art, so around every corner are sculptures, mosaics, structures of wood, stone and metal... funky fountains and sparkling mirrored angels in amongst the trees and foliage.
Chairs and lighting come
in weird and wonderful designs

The waitresses wear bright feathered headdresses, flamboyant earrings and traditional looking aprons...
and the coffee was good...
Glad I got out there and joined in!

I hope you don't mind that I'm usually the first to leave a comment! I look forward to visiting Moyo's next time we're in Jo'burg. What an interesting place rendered well by your pencil! Excellent shapes and shading. Were you able to draw in peace, or did you attract attention?

oh, I'm so delighted that you check in first, second, whenever you do...
The top two drawings I found spots where nobody seemed to notice me - the others were from my table, where only my waiter took note - and changed from being somewhat miffed (that I just wanted a coffee) to very warm and interested - though I didn't have anything worthwhile to show him then - I finished shading later at home, which improved matters.

Hello Dries - well what a surprise to have a comment from Moyo itself!! How did you come across my blog?...anyone would think we'd organised this as a marketing exercise! I'll definitely say hi next time I'm over there - thanks :)

Hi Helen - yes, just a little far from midwest USA, but you never know where life might take you...!

Terrific sketches! They look like they could be ancient drawings found in the museum.

These drawings are fabulous! Such interesting use of positive and negative space, and the last one, with the red hat, is wonderful, charming and sensitively drawn!
