Urban Sketchercising

Well I tootled off to fetch the seagull painting from the Watercolour Society - as I expected, it was turned down, but the two Spring studies got in. They were very nice about it, and suggested I tone down the yellow and resubmit it. Maybe. On the long way home I stopped at Sandton City, looking for a warm jersey (sweater/jumper?) to buy in this shockingly cold snap we're having. After trawling the enormous shopping centre, (I think if I'd had a pedometer attached it would have totted up quite a large number of steps!) I had coffee in the Food Court and sketched some of the patrons, for Urban Sketchers, as I've neglected that blogging activity for some time. But I reckon I killed two birds with one stone.

Great sketch! You've done really well with the faces.

What fun! and good work. I especially love the smile on the gal in the foreground. As for watercolor societies, well, judging really boils down to the opinion of a few. Everyone has an opinion! But good that the spring studies were accepted!

Thanks Katherine and Megha!

Suzanne, that woman in the foreground didn't stop smiling the whole time she was there, I decided I must try and take a leaf out of her book!
As for the WS - yes, if you submit you have to accept that particular judging panels decision - its probably good to be challenged occasionally!

Great sketch! You have the knack to paint crowds!
... and did you find the jumper-sweater-jersey?

I did find one Cathy, thanks - well to add to the layers, anyway! I was trying to analyse how I sketch crowds while I was doing this - I think you asked in another comment - I'll blog about that sometime.

Very good sketching and don't you dare "tone down" that yellow in your seagull painting - I love it. It will be looked at and loved by another group of judges so hold it back and see - test the waters every now and then :) Congratulations on getting your others in, though - they are so light-filled and lovely, the judges would have had to be blind not to see the beauty in those. And don't forget, when the show runs, to get some photos of the paintings with you beside them - always a fun thing to see. Sorry I'm sounding a bit bossy this morning, aren't I?

:-D Rhonda - I could do with a boss sometimes - I wouldn't have thought to get photos, and good to have a strong opinion about the yellow!

A very nice sketch,we feel the 3d.
And it is a good exercise for drawing,
to be in a croud and render the feeling.
