Joburg Carnival
A few of us sketchers still in Joburg over the holidays went into town to sketch the old year out on Monday at the annual Joburg Carnival. Groups of inner city residents, with the help of local artists and art students, make floats, dress up and parade through the streets. The procession got to our designated meeting place nearly an hour sooner than I thought they would. I was a bit early, so dashed over to where they were coming down the next street towards Nelson Mandela Bridge and scribbled off a couple of quick impressions. Luckily the parade ended nearby in Newtown, where we caught up with it and carried on sketching as the groups competed for best costumes, floats and performances. Onlookers crowded around some of the sketchers, fascinated, but blocking their view, and ran off to tell the subjects they were being drawn, who then came over to have a look. Quite chaotic, but lots of fun.
I took too many sketching implements and couldn't decide which to use - so a bit of a mixture here. I must learn to restrict my choices.
This and other possible New Year resolutions to follow, but in the meantime, I wish all my friends, followers and passers-by, all the very best for a happy, healthy, love and art filled 2013!

Testing times

I've been thinking I should try and focus this blog a bit and stick to watercolours and nature, but that's not where life is at the moment, or not all the time.... today was a(nother) trip to a traffic licensing centre to book a learner's test for our youngest child. Heavy traffic, bureaucracy, power outages, frustration, waiting, waiting, and therefore a chance to sketch, what would I do without it? So, some ugly buildings, an ice cream man who came, and went, and came back again, and a turnstile that kept on turning - and eventually a boy with a booking to to take his learner's, please, for the last time this time!!Oh, but I did get out yesterday for a few minutes to the greenest, lushest most verdant Emmarentia Dam park. I started sketching and watercolouring, when I heard cries of "no, Oscar, nooo-o-oooo!!" and looked up to find the cutest Staffie puppy in mid-flight onto my sketchbook and lap. That was fine, I can incorporate muddy paw prints into a landscape, but then huge raindrops started plopping onto the page and the black clouds said they weren't going to stop, so I flapped the sketchbook closed - thus creating the masterful green reflections in the water - and trekked off home to finish it from memory. I know it looks ridiculously shrieking green - but it was!

Another Ice-cream man
Another small oil painting I did on one of the panels (25x25cm) I was using for the Jacaranda paintings - primed with Indian Red Oxide acrylic paint. I tried to keep the brushstrokes loose and not get hung up on details, but, yoh!, small faces are hard to render with oil paint, let alone tiny writing and bicycle tyres... (Those who know him may recognise one of the icecream buyers in this painting :o)
These icecream men are a part of South African town and city life - flocking in numbers to any outdoor event or gathering and at school gates (though many schools are trying to discourage it so the kids don't overdose on sugar and tartrazine) and the ting-a-ling of their bells are a summer background sound. Do other cities have mobile icecream men - or women for that matter? I glimpsed one on TV on a documentary about Tokyo, but don't recall seeing any in other places that I've mostly fleetingly visited. I've painted them a few times - Vivienne has the one pictured on the right, and this one I did for someone who was emigrating.
